British Museum Top Ten Treasures
In 2003 to celebrate the museum’s 250th birthday various special events were held including a day of talks by Alan Bennett, Sandi Toksvig and other celebrities and some short tours by half a dozen of the Eye Openers – I did the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and Celtic Britain. Four experts (J D Hill, Leslie Webster, Jonathan Williams and Ian McIntyre, along with Neil MacGregor, devised a list of the top ten treasures in the museum found buried in the UK. They ranked them in order but I am going to look at them in chronological order. Of these 1 group is made of wood, 1 is of ivory but the rest are mainly made up of bling: gold and silver.
I prepared these slides to give an online presentation to fellow guides for Christmas 2021.
